There was I time where Ajax Spray & Wipe was my go to multi-purpose spray. I fell for the marketing of killing 99.9% of germs and didn’t even consider what was in the bottle.
Fast forward a decade and my awareness around toxins, chemicals and the affects they have on my body (and my family) has led me to living a toxin free lifestyle, and my health has dramatically improved since I committed to living this way.
Without going into full detail, here is a snapshot of the damaging affects of some chemicals hidden inside an everyday bottle of supermarket anti-bacterial multi-purpose spray:
Organ system toxicity, Depress the central nervous system, the eyes and upper respiratory tract (nose and throat), Irritation, Headaches, Fatigue and loss of concentration. Consumption of ethanol during pregnancy may affect the unborn child, resulting in spontaneous abortion, developmental problems, or birth defects. This is known as ‘foetal alcohol syndrome’. May cause mutations (genetic changes). Known human carcinogen (cancer causing), Allergies, Immune Toxicity, Reproduction health issues and infertility
Eeek. And this is a product I would spray multiple times a day, breathe in and touch with my hands (thus absorbing into my blood stream).
On top of that, if your Spray and Wipe contains the ingredient ‘fragrance’ then that right there is are over 3000 chemicals alone which do not need to be disclosed on the label. Fragrance has the most damaging affects on our fertility, endocrine system, immune system and reproductive system.
In fact, any product with the ingredient ‘Fragrance’ should be avoided at all costs. This includes all personal care, hair care, skin care etc.
Embracing green cleaning was something I did fairly quickly.
I researched ways I could still kill 99.9% of germs (including Salmonella, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus & Enterococcus), lift grease and enjoy a lemon citrus scent as these mainstream cleaners were promising – yet without causing long term damage to my body.
That’s when I discovered the power of essential oils.
With natural cleansing and purifying properties, certain essential oils are ideal for cleaning and they leave behind a beautiful scent that instantly makes your home feel clean and refreshed (… and you know how I feel about cleaning, it isn’t my strong point, yet since i moved to DIY essential oils I actually enjoy making the house cleaner! #hubbyishappy)
Here is my go-to DIY Multi-Purpose Spray which I make up every few months.
It’s so easy, cheap and non-toxic!
Ingredients
-
¼ cup white vinegar
-
1 ¾ cups water
-
30 drops essential oils
Recommended essential oil combinations that are anti-bacterial, kill bacteria and lift grease:

10 drops each of Tea Tree, doTERRA On Guard and Lemon (this is my fav! See below research for why…)
-
15 drops each of doTERRA On Guard and Wild Orange
-
15 drops doTERRA On Guard and Lemon
Why do I use On Guard?
Essential oils have the ability to hamper the growth of a diverse range of pathogens because of the presence of natural compounds produced by the organs of plants. Specifically Tea Tree, Clove, Rosemary and Cinnamon have been shown to kill bacteria and pathogens as shown in research here.

Add all ingredients to a glass spray bottle.
-
Shake thoroughly. Spray on surfaces and wipe clean.
