I live in a home with two boys (well one man and one 4 year old) and let’s just say the toilet frequently forgets to be flushed (by the 4 year old obvs).
I found I was consistently cleaning the toilet to remove the odour, until that is I discovered these ‘toilet pods’.
In our household, I have embraced green cleaning and have eliminated all toxic chemicals in traditional cleaning products and only use essential oils. I’ve discovered that nothing compares to nature in both killing germs and in upgrading our health.
When I was growing up mum would use ‘blue loo’ to keep our toilet fresh and clean, or those plastic holder thingy’s that sit under the seat and clean with every flush.
The unfortunate thing is; both of these options and packed full of nasty chemicals!
So what’s a girl to do?
I am slightly obsessed with do-it-yourself recipes, there is something about creating toxin free natural solutions for my family that makes me feel like I am doing such good in our home.
Once you begin… you won’t stop.
Enter Natural Toilet-Cleaning Pods.
They are so easy to make and Jake loves to help!
I now use these in every bathroom twice weekly. They sit on the shelf in a glass jar and I simply drop one in, allow to dissolve then if need be use the toilet brush to give a little clean.
This has been the #mumhack that has eliminated odour and maintained freshness between cleans – and I tell e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e because they are so effective!
You can use any essential oils; just ensure the oils are naturally anti-bacterial. Like Tea Tree or Lemon.
I personally chose a blend that is designed to eliminate odours.
You can thank me later!

Natural Toilet-Cleaning Pods
Ingredients
-
1 cup baking soda
-
¼ cup citric acid
-
1½ tablespoon unscented castile soap
-
10 drops Essential Oil (I use the Purify Cleansing Blend as pictured here)
Instructions
-
Stir the baking soda and citric acid together until combined.
-
Slowly stir in the castile soap and Purify. Stir until the mixture resembles wet sand.
-
Pack the pod mixture into a mold and let dry at least four hours. If the mixture expands above the mold, firmly press back down.
-
Once dry, remove the pods from the mold and store in an airtight container.
-
To use, simply drop one into the toilet, wait until the pod stops bubbling, and scrub away!
-
I purchased my silicon molds from Kmart.
Want to try these for yourself?
doTERRA are the only brand of essential oils I trust for my family due to their comprehensive third party testing of EVERY batch (I don’t know of another company that does this).
Please don’t use cheap oils. They can be adulterated with synthetics, chemicals and solvents which end up being just as bad for you than the toxic supermarket brands we are trying to avoid.
If you want to grab doTERRA oils at the same price I get them (25% off), click below.
For those who love more info (like me!). This blend of plants in a little brown bottle does more for you than cleansing your toilet….
Did you know the air in your home can be incredibly toxic with airborne bacteria?
Essential oils have the ability to hamper the growth of a diverse range of pathogens because of the presence of natural compounds produced by the organs of plants. This is why I diffuse Purify along with Clove, Thyme, Tea Tree and others regularly in my home to kill bacteria in the air (and in our bodies). Read more here). Research shows indoor air quality can be up to three times more toxic than outdoor air.
The Purify blend as been specifically composed of select essential oils known for their cleansing, purifying, and protecting properties, it’s a household must-have, as it can eliminate odors in a natural way, free of harmful chemicals. Seriously, I am in love with this blend and diffuse regularly!
9 ways that I use Purify in my home:
-
I eliminate odors in bathrooms, bags and shoes by having this blend in a spray bottle with water. I also diffuse in rooms that contain harsh odors or stagnant smells. It’s my favourite blend to diffuse on cleaning day!
-
As the research shows, the essential oils contained in Purify can protect against environmental threats and airborne pathogens. Hence why I diffuse + spray regularly.
-
For car odor, I use in the car diffuser (this is the one I have, it’s brilliant!) but you can also place a few drops on a cotton ball and put it in or near your air vent. It will eliminate odors and replace with a refreshing scent.
-
Add five drops of Purify essential oil blend into a small spray bottle filled with water for wiping down countertops and leave a fresh scent. You can also add into your DIY Multi-Purpose Cleaner.
-
With a husband that goes to the gym daily and who is a personal trainer; smelly clothes into the laundry doesn’t always translate into stench-free clothing coming out. I add a few drops of Purify essential oil into the rinse cycle and it’s a dream at helping eliminate the sweaty odors.
-
Stove cleaners are t-o-x-i-c! Instead I have this DIY Stove Top Cleaner made up in a glass bottle under my sink. It cleans off grime and leaves the stove’s surface looking clean and sparkly.
-
For mozzie bites I add one drop to a teaspoon of coconut oil and apply to the bite (or any skin irritation). It has strong cleansing properties that can help soothe skin irritations.
-
This is also one of my favourite DIY #mumhacks. DIY Fridge Refreshers are amazing! Fridge refreshers are incredibly easy to make and only have four ingredients. I also place these under my sink and in the bathroom behind the toilet to help eliminate odor.
