my sources Launching my business has enabled me to travel the world, hold retreats in luxury tropical locations, study from some of the best Personal Development mentors globally, work from anywhere (this year I have worked from Noosa {my fav place in the world whilst spending time with my sister and her new baby girl}, Port Douglas, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Chicago, New York City and Bali) whilst most importantly allowing me to make a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of women.

dating connect net I receive many emails and interview requests asking ‘how did you get to where you are today?’. It’s been a long journey that began at age 19 (that’s almost 15 years ago!), however for this blog I have condensed this down into practical and actionable resources which may help you in your coaching journey today:

MDA_squareThe Mind Detox Method is the core technique I use with my clients. In fact, I believe so strongly in this method I trained to become the Master Trainer and launched the Mind Detox Academy here in Australia.

Founded by Sandy Newbigging (Hay House Author, Meditation Master + Speaker) this effective 5 step method finds the hidden root-cause of your clients problems.

Think self-sabotage, anxiety, depression, physical illness, repeating behaviours, hidden resistance and blocks – the method is ‘essential’ in healing the past, releasing internal resistance and shifting a person’s belief system. It’s your clients ‘belief system’ that causes their life circumstances, thought patterns, actions and behaviours. If your clients are not seeing results, stuck in habits or unhealthy behaviours they can’t shift through sheer will power or they are not following through on the things you are setting for them as a coach – this is your answer!

I studied Life Coaching with Alistair who runs The Mind Academy. For me, Life Coaching was an essential addition to my current certifications to help me become skilled in correct questioning to bring out my client’s truth and desires.

Alistair no longer offers this certification so I was delighted to hear when Julie Parker told me she was launching Beautiful You Coaching Academy.

Julie had invited me to become the Beautiful You Assistant Coach for her Sydney training, however due to the commitments of my own business and the Mind Detox Academy I ‘hesitantly’ declined (yes, it was a tough decision! If I was superwoman and could do everything, I would have loved to!). I wholeheartedly endorse this Life Coaching certification and stand by Julie’s work 100%. She is the most authentic, honest and beautiful woman you will ever meet!

celebrateThe very first training I did was in 2010. My NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) Practitioner and NLP Master Practitioner certifications (I did these pretty much back to back followed by The Mind Detox Method – yep, it was intense!).

I did the Master Prac training with Tim Hallbom of the NLP Institute Of California – I really enjoyed this course as it provided a deep insight into the mechanics of the mind, belief systems and language. In saying that; I only use the Mind Detox Method with my clients. Why? Because it is a simple and effective 5 step method that gets the same results achieved with the hundreds of NLP techniques. However, there were some key positives that NLP provided. The meta programs, which is understanding your clients filters and how they perceive the world, was imperative at helping me see through a client’s story to hear the embedded ‘beliefs’ hidden in their language. This is essential as a coach to help your clients through their own hidden blocks. I will recommend a few books below to help introduce you to these NLP techniques. There are countless organisations in Australia who teach NLP. I have not recommend any as I haven’t studied or know of their credibility personally.

OfficialEFT3.v3EFT is a technique I was introduced to in my Mind Detox Practitioner Training in dealing with unresolved emotional blockages. I then went on to study the technique further online. Like NLP, there are a number of people teaching EFT however the Founder and Creator is Gary Craig.

What is EFT? Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT (often known as Tapping or EFT Tapping), is a universal healing tool that can provide impressive results for physical, emotional, and performance issues. EFT operates on the premise that no matter what part of your life needs improvement, there are unresolved emotional issues in the way. Even for physical issues, chronic pain, or diagnosed conditions, it is common knowledge that any kind of emotional stress can impede the natural healing potential of the human body. If you are interested in exploring this technique further then visit Gary Craig’s website below.

Anyone who knows me will tell you I am a book nerd. In fact I read a book a week and have done so for many years. The only addiction I have is a Kindle One Click! (allows me to buy kindle books off amazon at the click of your button and delivered instantly to my kindle device – brilliant! #notsobrilliantformycreditcard).

I have mastered many new coaching skills through studying and implementing the knowledge given through books. If I could choose my top picks to help you, they would be:

This is by far the most rewarding of my work and where the Mind Detox Method comes into play. The reason why your clients are the way they are is due to all that has happened to them in their past. Every person carries a wounded soul, a hurt heart and a damaged identity.

These books have helped me in understanding new methods, wisdom and root-causes of my clients life problems and physical symptoms/illnesses. UNDERSTANDING THE MECHANICS OF THE MIND, PERSONALITY + IDENTITY

How deep do you want to go is my question? I have a tendency to want to understand e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g about a topic I am interested in. So when it comes to getting the best results with my clients, I desired to master how the mind operates and therefore how it could be changed. Firstly, this NLP book is fantastic and will give you a good all-round understanding NLP: The Essential Guide to Neuro-Linguistic Programming
I could recommend many more clinical style books in understanding personality structure and identity for those who want to go deep – but here’s a few to get you started: PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT – MY TOP PICKS!

Gosh, I could go on and on and on with recommendations! Personal Development is how I spend my spare time and has been for 15 years. The books below are my consistent go-to-guides. If you get Psycho-Cybernetics make sure you buy the audio as well – this is one of the original Personal Development materials that almost every book has taken from. It’s in depth but incredible 🙂

Remember you are not only a Coach but a business owner. So it’s time to put your business hat on and up-skill yourself to run a successful company. There is no hiding from this aspect of your business – otherwise it’s simply an expensive hobby (especially when the client’s are not walking through your door).

First and foremost; get your hands on everything by Seth Godin writes, he is a marketing genius!

Again, there are countless mentors and coaches who I have bought from, hired and followed over the years; Marie Forleo, Ali Brown, Fabienne Fredrickson, Christine Kane, Kristen Morelli, Julie Parker, Eben Pagan, Lisa Sasevich, Robin Sharma and Sandi Krakowski to name a few.

This year I joined Natalie McNeil’s {She Takes On The World} exclusive mastermind and with a small group of women we navigated the journey of entrepreneurial success. Natalie is one business woman who knows her sh*z! She has been featured in Wall Street Journal,, Forbes & ForbesWoman and Mashable. She is the perfect combination of heart + hustle and her wisdom on running a multiple six figure business is astonishing. This woman walks her talk and has the company to prove it.

Natalie is one coach who will provide you with all the strategies, tools and processes to build a successful business (both online and offline). I HIGHLY recommend her new year-long incubator for ambitious entrepreneurs, The Conquer Club, and if you are ready for the next stage in your business get into her Inner Circle (for those wanting to up-level to 6 or 7 figures). You will want to work with her direct.

If I wasn’t popping out a beautiful bundle of joy in May 2015 – I would be there right beside you the entire year then celebrating our success at the Retreat in Mexico over a cocktail or two!

Launching a successful business goes deeper than becoming an incredible Coach/ Therapist/ Practitioner. In today’s world you must master the art of online marketing. I am incredibly grateful I spent my early twenties immersed in affiliate and internet marketing because it gave me to knowledge and skill to launch my Social Media Marketing agency (which I managed alongside this business for the first 3 years).

There are countless areas to focus on when it comes to online marketing but here are a few tools to get you started:

Mailchimp: is email marketing software. Your email list is your business gold. Mail Chimp is free to get started and will enable you to capture emails and create attractive newsletters to build trust with your list on a regular basis.

Bluchic: if you are looking for a beautiful yet cost effective website – look no further! For less than $100 you can buy a stunning website template and install via Hostgator’s one click install – which means you can be online, all by yourself, in one evening. My website is the Jacqueline theme. Now it takes a little to get your head around the wordpress platform AND there are many elements that make up a gorgeous website design, such as logo design, header image and photography, however this is a cheap and fairly easy alternative for a great website AND you have access to the countless wordpress plugins that enhance your site. Upgrade to the photoshop bundle and you have your social media banners and business cards templates ready to go. If you don’t have photoshop – just hire a cheap designer on Odesk or Elance (see below).

Squarespace: I have numerous websites built in squarespace (Mind Detox Retreat, Mind Detox Academy) because I love the chic and modern layouts. The downside of squarespace is that you don’t have access to the plugins that wordpress platform has and when creating multiple sites – you pay each month for the hosting. However, if you want a beautiful website Squarespace is easier than going down the Bluchic route to get a website in a jiffy! Simply choose a beautiful template, add in gorgeous images and copy…and voila!

Hostgator: once you buy your domain name (i.e. you need to host your website online (a.k.a google). Hostgator is great because it allows you to host multiple domains for one low cost per month. So if you decide to launch other services down the line such as online programs where you have a different domain name for each – then you won’t be racking up additional hosting fees for each individual domain.

Wishlist Member: speaking of online programs. Wishlist is a user-friendly wordpress plugin that turns your website into a membership site. When you do decide to go down the online e-course route, this one is my recommendation for look + feel.

Odesk + Elance: I outsource everything in my business. I have two Virtual Assistant’s, a Web Coder and a Bookkeeper (I use Xero). As a Coach you can’t do everything yourself…believe me, I did for the first 2 years and worked 7 days a week. Even if you don’t think you can afford it, find a VA for $5 per hour to at least do your social media uploads, blog post uploads and email marketing. When you’re charging out between $100 – $250 per hour it’s a much better use of your time.

Xero: knowing your numbers is SO important! Track what you are making every week, even if this is in excel when you get started. Where attention goes, energy flows! Xero is great for me as it feeds in from PayPal (where I have all my payment processing) as well as my bank accounts. Plus, my bookkeeper is in India and can log in to do my accounts without me lifting a finger.

Satori: as a Coach you don’t want to be missing emails from your clients changing sessions or booking new sessions. Let alone keeping track of your invoicing AND storing clients notes (piles of paper is not effective!). Enter Satori app. This software was a life saver for me, it streamlines your booking process, allows you to create questionnaires (my clients complete an extensive questionnaire before we begin), sends out all invoicing automatically (which goes into PayPal) and allows you to keep notes on each session. In two words…get it!

Of course, this is just a fraction of what it takes to run a successful coaching empire however when you are starting out – many of the basics are here – I hope it helps you in some way.

With love,

DS x
